Title: The Rapture
Published: Ventura County Reporter
Date: Nov. 26, 2014
About this cartoon: Some religious conservatives believe in the Rapture, an "end-times" scenario where all fundamentalist Christian true believers are swept up by God into Heaven to meet Jesus, while those left behind on Earth suffer through an era of Tribulation and profound misery. A number of officials in the George W. Bush administration are thought to have been believers in this, as well as some from earlier administrations such as Reagan's Interior Secretary James Watt, plus many currently serving conservatives in Congress.
This cartoon was prompted by the release of a 2014 movie, widely panned by critics, called "Left Behind" starring Nicolas Cage, an apocalyptic vision of the world plunged into chaos following the Rapture.
