About this cartoon: Governor Jerry Brown's efforts to deal with the state's enormous deficit focused on calling a special election to let voters decide if they should extend some expiring taxes. The Republicans immediately let it be known they were so anti-tax that they would not even let voters be able to make such a decision, and the few GOP legislators even willing to talk with Brown were blasted as traitors by the party (and those few presented such increasing demands in trade for their votes that Brown threw his hands up and broke off talks). The resulting alternatives — massive cuts to everything — will hurt all Californians and won't do anything to improve the Republicans' image.
