About this cartoon: William O. Douglas was one of the great Supreme Court justices, a liberal bulwark and First Amendment defender on a court that would soon shift dramatically to the right under Reagan and Bush. Appointed by Franklin Roosevelt, he had been given consideration to be Roosevelt's running mate in 1944, and Douglas would have become president after FDR died in 1945.
