Title: Fossil fuels
Published: VCReporter
Date: April 23, 2009
About this cartoon: A cartoon for Earth Day. Heat-trapping greenhouse gases, created most significantly by burning fossil fuels, are warming the Earth and melting the polar ice caps at rates that geologic time measurements cannot explain. The results are already evident: melting snowpacks, intensified hurricanes, widening areas of drought, increasing wildfires, the hottest average years on record and accelerating extinctions are just some of the many ill effects being seen now. The good news is, the new Obama Administration is ready to take action of what it considers an urgent global crisis that was mostly ignored under the Bush Administration. The bad news is, much of the damage has already been done and can't be reversed, and global actions to reform our ways will still take decades to have a positive impact.
