About this cartoon: The U.S. Supreme Court in effect legalized gay marriage in several states by declining to hear challenges to lower court rulings. Gay marriage suddenly became legal in 11 states, bringing the total nationwide to 30 states (plus the District of Columbia). Only the South and parts of the Midwest remain solidly anti- gay marriage, and the shift in attitudes over just a few years has been dramatic, pointing the way for more states to follow suit. Of course, religious conservatives are quite displeased, but history is turning quickly against them.
