About this cartoon: The offshore siting of liquefied natural gas is a controversial topic in Southern California and elsewhere. Proponents feel it will greatly aid in energy independence and provide needed supplies while posing minimal risk. Opponents are uneasy about unknowns as far as safety and environmental protection, and fear an LNG facility would become a tempting target for terrorists. The Congress also muddied the waters by slipping in an anonymous rider to a spending bill that would force state and local governments to go along with any LNG facility the federal government asked for.
